Men’s healthMRI

The gold-standard prostate check: without a biopsy first

Multiparametric MRI shows whether there is anything in the prostate that actually needs a biopsy, and, for most men, that there is not. Reported by a consultant uro-radiologist, delivered with our hospital imaging partners.

Is this the right type of scan?

Ultrasound, MRI or CT for the prostate

Each modality answers a different question. For finding significant prostate cancer before any biopsy, mpMRI is the recognised first test, and it is the one NICE recommends.

What this scan shows

What mpMRI can tell you, and what it cannot

01

Clinically significant prostate cancer

mpMRI is very good at showing the cancers that matter, and equally good at showing when there is nothing that needs a needle.

02

A PI-RADS score, explained simply

Every report grades the gland from 1 (very unlikely) to 5 (very likely) so you and your urologist know exactly what to do next.

03

Prostate size and shape

Benign enlargement, which is common and usually the cause of urinary symptoms.

04

Inflammation

Prostatitis and its effects on the gland.

05

What it cannot tell you

MRI cannot confirm cancer on its own. A targeted biopsy does that, and a small number of significant cancers are not visible. Your PSA, examination and MRI are read together.

Safety & suitability checklist

Check these before you book

MRI is safe for almost everyone, but a strong magnet needs a few honest answers first. If any of these apply, tell us when you book. Most are easily managed.

Pacemaker, implanted device or metal in the body

Tell us before you book. Many modern implants are MRI-safe, but every one is checked against its documentation first.

Metal fragments, especially in the eyes

From welding or grinding: an x-ray may be needed before the scan.

Kidney function, if contrast is used

A recent blood test may be requested; we can take it here.

Claustrophobia

The scanner is open at both ends, you can have music, there is a call button in your hand, and the radiographer talks to you between every sequence. Most men who worry about it find it fine.

Hip replacements

Usually safe to scan, but they can affect image quality, tell us so the protocol can be adjusted.

What the appointment actually feels like

The gold-standard prostate check: without a biopsy first

Before

A safety questionnaire, a short wait, and a change into a gown. You can eat normally unless told otherwise.

15 minutes

Contrast, explained

Sometimes a small injection makes the picture clearer

A gadolinium-based contrast agent may be given through a cannula in the arm partway through the scan. It highlights blood flow in the gland, which helps characterise any suspicious area. Most men feel nothing more than a cool sensation; serious reactions are very rare, and kidney function is checked beforehand where needed.

Your results pathway

A written consultant report, then a plan

MRI is not explained live the way ultrasound is, the images need dedicated reporting time. What we promise instead is specific: a consultant uro-radiologist’s written report on your portal within 48 hours, a call to talk it through if you want one, and a defined next step every time.

Preparation

How to prepare

Eat and drink normally

Unless we tell you otherwise when you book. Avoid a very full bladder.

Leave metal at home

Jewellery, watches, belts and cards with magnetic strips all stay in the locker.

Bring your PSA results

And any previous imaging or biopsy reports. They help the radiologist read your scan in context.

Medication

Take it as normal. Tell us if you have a kidney condition or a contrast allergy.

Questions, answered

What people ask before this scan

Anything else? Call 0203 904 4441, a real person answers, and a clinician can call you back.

I am claustrophobic: will I manage?

Most people do. The scanner is short and open at both ends, your head can be positioned near the opening, you have headphones with music and a call button, and the radiographer speaks to you between sequences. If you are very anxious, talk to us before you book; a mild sedative can be arranged through your GP.

Is there any radiation?

No. MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves. It is the reason it can be repeated safely for monitoring.

How long until I get the report?

Within 48 hours of the scan, on your secure portal. If anything needs urgent action we call you directly.

Do I need a referral?

MRI requires a clinical referral. If you do not have one, our clinic doctor can assess you and provide it. It is part of the booking, not a separate hurdle.

Will I need a biopsy afterwards?

Most men will not. That is the point of doing the MRI first: it shows whether there is a specific area that needs sampling, and if there is, the biopsy can be targeted precisely.
